Does Size Matter?
Julie was planning her first ever dinner party – it was a New York theme and she wanted the entire menu to be inspired by the city. She knew she wanted to incorporate street meat but she just couldn’t think of how to do it in a proper way. There are cocktail weenies, veggie dogs, various European sausages, and even pigs in a blanket (where the hotdog is cozied-up in side a pastry shell). She decided to consult some friends who have experienced them all for their advice.
“Try out those little mini ones. They’re just so cute and easy to eat. Heck, you could probably fit at least two in your mouth,” said her friend Molly.
Sandra disagreed. “Have you ever seen a cocktail weenie? They’re so shockingly small that you’ll be more concentrated on trying to hide your disappointment and wishing that you had a lot more. Trust me, if you serve those, everyone will leave unsatisfied no matter how much they tell you they had a great time.”
Julie decided to test them out herself. She was a bit alarmed by the size when she first took it out of the packaging. She was able to grab it with two fingers and even let the whole thing sit in the palm of her hand. The decision to eat the hotdog was a bit complicated- she wasn’t sure if she should just take in the end like she would a regular sized hotdog or simply put the whole thing in her mouth. She opted for the later which she found out to be quite unappealing. It wasn’t as fun as eating a regular hotdog where you can eat from one end and then start on the next. She concluded that the cocktail weenies would make a great appetizer, allowing people to warm up for the bigger portions they’d be served later. They may not be fully satisfying, but they do the job when you’re starving.
Sandra suggested going from the other end of the spectrum and serving up some foot-longs. “It’ll be a crowd pleaser guaranteed. People will be raving all night about the size of the hotdog they got to enjoy, especially if they’re served with warm, toasty buns. I bet the women at the party will even brag if they get through it all.”
“Nah, I think that’ll be a waste,” said Molly. “Too many people will be intimidated by them to even put one on their plate. A foot-long is just too much to handle. And think about how embarrassed the men will be if their woman can handle a whole foot long while they’re stuck with just a regular sized hotdog.”
Again, Julie tested it out herself. She ordered a foot-long hot dog from a nearby vender. When she was handed the dog her eyes immediately widened and a smile spread across her face. It was a bit awkward to handle it with two hands, and it meant that she couldn’t have a free hand to do other things with (like hold a drink). But she tackled it anyway and made it her mission to make it to the end. About midway through, she needed a break. Her jaw was hurting from chewing too much and it was taking much too long to eat. At the end, she decided that there is only so much hotdog you can actually fit in your mouth until you want to move on to something better. And not only that, but the far end of the hotdog is always neglected. The women just can’t get to it.
And lastly, the pigs in a blanket. Does that extra treat covering the hotdog make it better or worse? How many of her guests would prefer it? Would they look at it as an appealing bonus or something they’d rather peel away?
“I absolutely love pigs in a blanket,” said Molly. “It’s an extra treat you don’t often get to have. And you can’t find them at most hotdog vendors.”
Sandra disagreed stating that there’s no need for it. “It hides the delicacy of the meat itself.”
“Would an M&M be the same without its candy coating?” asked Molly. “Then it would just be your average piece of chocolate.”
Julie decided that pigs in a blanket are an acquired taste, one that has a lot of bonuses but that a lot of women are afraid to try. She decided to buy a few of those for the women who wanted that extra treat. And for the rest, she went with the standard, average-sized hotdog. Nothing fancy, but would be just enough to please everyone there and satisfy their appetites.
