And He Lied About his Credentials

Remember the story of when I was lied to about a boy and his age? Well, I’ve recently heard a story that tops the cake when it comes to lying to impress a girl. This is a story about one of my best friends who caught a guy lying about his credentials. And how she played on his lie for weeks, waiting for him to confess.

She scoped the guy out at a bar and noticed that he was hanging out with some people she knew. This gave her a prime opportunity to approach him. She headed over with drink and hand, took a swig of liquid courage and walked up to a mutual friend. After some small talk, she was quickly introduced to the guy she had her eye on all night. A handshake later, and the two were soon having a one-on-one.

Soon the conversation shifted from how they both knew the same people to sharing their credentials. She asked the question first, “What do you do for a living?”

“I’m an architect,” he responded. Now of all jobs to choose in the world, choosing to pretend to be an architect was probably the worst decision he could make.

“Really? I am too!” my friend exclaimed. What a coincidence. “Where did you go to school?”

Now I have to give the guy credit; he was able to carry on his lie about his career very smoothly. He told her where he went to school, his favourite classes, and even who his favourite architects were. He had her so convinced that she was taken completely aback when a mutual friend told her days later that he works in a factory and has a degree in visual arts.

Rather than confronting her new found friend, Molly decided to play along. For about three weeks, the two talked online about their common interest. She got his opinion on doing a post-grad degree at the school he claimed to go to. They exchanged architectural websites. And they talked about every aspect of design possible. The fact that he was able to converse over the internet probably made these topics easier to research on the fly.

Finally, the mutual friend let the cat out of the bag. He told his friend that Molly knew everything and that he had been carrying on a lie for almost a month. She also knew that he was older than he actually told her as well. Needless to say, he was very apologetic the next time he spoke to Molly. She took it all in good fun and since then has not let him live it down.
