Boys in Bands
From the beginning of time (or at least pop culture), the band member has always been seen as women’s biggest weakness. Think of how our grandmothers hearts must have melted from the sounds of Paul Anka or Frank Sinatra, how our aunts were hypnotized by Elvis’s gyrating hips, and how our mothers daydreamed of marrying a boy like Davey Jones (or in my mother’s case, David Bowie). Band members may also be a girl’s first crush and celebrity fascination. Think of our days with New Kids on the Block or Backstreet Boys or how pubescent girls react at the site of the Jonas Brothers. If you look at historical biopics and concert footage, you will always see the same thing – women are crazy over boys in bands. And this phenomenon is not just a required taste for some people; literally every woman I know has a celebrity crush on a band member and if not, they without a doubt will develop one after going to a concert.
What is it about boys in bands that make us so hot? How is it that a guy whom we would normally not give a second glance, can hold our gaze for hours just as soon as he picks up a guitar? Or how a guy whom we would not normally care to have a conversation with can hold our attention, so long as his words are sung? I have spoken to some close friends to find out what it is about musicians:
1) Talent- a woman loves a guy who can show off something he is good at. If the woman has a similar talent, such as play the guitar, she can admire how quickly he can strum his chords. If a woman does not share the talent, she will admire how difficult it must be to learn it.
2) Ambition and passion- it’s safe to say that every musician is extremely passionate about what they do, and this seems to turn women on. Making the band is hard to do and it requires drive to get there. It’s also a risky business to be involved in, since it is tough to make it big. To choose being in a band over being a doctor, shows just how passionate the guy is for music. I think women like to think that this passion and dedication would reflect in their relationships and love making skills.
3) Style- In some sense, every band relies on their fashion and style choice. Whether it’s boy band or grunge band, these guys are stylized in a way to attract a certain type of crowd, especially women. Let’s face it- music sells but so does their image.
4) Working the crowd- a lot of women seem to be turned on when a guy can catch the attention of an entire arena without doing keg stands or burping the alphabet. It’s an admirable way to be in the limelight. And it really is amazing to see how so many people can positively admire one person and become lost in the music they play.
5) Fantasy material- I think every woman takes an image of their band guy and places this image in a bedroom setting. You imagine how he can sing songs to you late at night or write a love song and dedicate it to you.
It is safe to say that the musician captures the hearts, and imaginations, of women more than any other occupation. Sure, actors and dancers are also high up in the most attractive job list, but somehow I don’t think a man who practices Shakespeare in the bedroom, or a man who break dances at the club, can capture your heart much like a guitar and a microphone.
