Model for a Day
I just got home a few hours ago from doing my first ever model/voice recording shoot. And I feel fantastic! Let me tell you, for anyone who needs a great ego boost, all you need is a friendly photographer and a bit of makeup and you will feel like a supermodel.
I auditioned to become a part of a website a few weeks ago. My boss actually asked me if I would be interested and all I had to do was submit a photo of myself. I figured why not? Even though I’m not a model, I may as well give it a shot. So I sent over a pic and a few days later I received an email congratulating me on making it to the next round. The next step was to record a voicemail of me reading a short script. Public speaking is sort of my forte, or at least was in grade school speeches, but I must say that I don’t like my voice. So although I doubted myself again, I figured why not?
A few days ago I was told that I was selected amongst people from all over Canada. And even better was that my roommate was the other one selected. What are the odds that of all the people who auditioned for this, my roommate and I were both chosen?
Today, we both headed down to the advertising agency and marketing group that was putting the website together. First thing was makeup. A makeup artist named Julie started working away on my face and I discovered that her list of celebrities that she has done makeup for include: Jude Law, Hayden Christensen and Vivica A. Fox (just to name a few). The same hands that put makeup on Jude Law’s face were now doing my own! I could only wish that she used the same brushes and never cleaned them.
Next was the photo shoot. I stood in front of a white backdrop with a bright light on me while a photographer snapped over a hundred photos of me smiling and posing. This was quite the ego boost. Let me tell you, nothing can make you feel better than a professional photographer saying the words ‘gorgeous’, ‘beautiful’, and ‘you’re a natural’ for about an hour. He even told me that I gave him a lot of diversity and a range that stretched from sexy to Southern Bell girl next door. And reviewing the photos was even better! A few people gathered around pointing out their favorites and didn’t say anything negative about any of my bad shots. I felt like a star!
Lastly was the voice recording, which strangely I was more nervous about than the photo shoot. I got to listen to my roommates recording which sounded amazing. Then we switched spots and I was given a quick lesson on the equipment in the studio. The man doing the recordings left me in the room and flicked on the switch so I could hear him through my headset. I got close to the microphone and read my script. And surprisingly I made it through the first time with no slurring or stumbling on words. The man spoke to me through the headset on which parts needed more enthusiasm and emphasis. I re-read it with his direction and the next round was even better. The people in the other room all clapped and said how good it was and after a few more takes, I was done.
My roommate and I shook hands with everyone we worked with that day, took a few business cards, and headed out and back into the real world. The few hours that we spent with those people put us on cloud nine for the rest of the day. We toasted each other with champagne back home and marked on the calendar the launch of the website, where we will get to feel like celebrities all over again. I’ll keep you all posted so that you can share my fifteen minutes of fame with me!
