Winning the Silver in the Beer Olympics

The Swiss Army!

The Swiss Army!

That’s right; The Beer Olympics is a real thing and I actually did win the silver medal for it. Me and three other girls, (A.K.A team Switzerland) beer ponged more accurately, chugged faster, and flipped cups with more finesse than teams with giant beer drinking men who do kegstands for fun. So as a true Olympian, I will take this opportunity to share my experience and give you a glimpse into the night so that you may be able to one day train and participate in a Beer Olympics of your own.

Q- When team Switzerland first came into place, most people were skeptical of the feats that you were aiming to accomplish. How did you deal with this?

A- Admittedly, there was a large amount of skepticism on our own team. Some of us were true amateurs. For example, I have only drunk two beers in my life and another team mate of mine had never played flip cup before. We set some personal goals that didn’t necessarily mean getting a medal, but that we still felt were attainable.

Q- What were these goals exactly?

A- For myself I wanted to make it through every event without passing out. We also wanted to be the best dressed team and the one with the most spirit.

Q- And did you obtain these goals?

A- Absolutely! We were the only team with matching outfits, or uniforms if you will. And we definitely added our own element of fun with the spirit we had. We danced the entire time we played flip cup and you should have seen when the DJ played Step by Step by New Kids! What was great about this was that not only was it fun but I think it worked as a great distraction for the opposing teams!

Q- Sounds like you had a great time! What was the most difficult event of the night?

A- I would say the relay race. I really underestimated the difficulty behind spinning around a baseball bat five times and then running up a set of stairs. If it wasn’t for my roommate cheering me on, I may have given up right there. Instead, I ran into a door frame, knocked a beer out of a bystanders hand, and dove into the finish line to make up for the time I lost tripping up the stairs.

Q- Ouch, how do you feel about your injury?

A- It was worth it. My teammates all put in a fight so it’s what I had to do to give it back to them.

Q- Which team put up the biggest competition for team Switzerland?

A- Team Canada 100%. It got down to a best of three flip-cup challenge. They won the first, we won the second, and finally by the third they took the gold. Team Narnia also deserves some recognition. Those fantastical bastards really took me by surprise.

Q- How will you better prepare for next years Olympics? Any new goals for your second attempt at the games?

A- I can’t complain about my team’s performance. We made it to the end and we put up a good fight. Passing out still seems inevitable for next year, but my goal is to make it to a couch and not the bathroom floor next time.

Q- Any last words?

A- Even though I am team Switzerland, the Beer Olympics is a true Canadian sport. I expect them to win gold again next year and I feel that Jon Montgomery would be a perfect addition to the team (just incase he may ever read this). And although this is in a different level than the real Olympics, we also utilized the qualities that set us apart from the rest: faith, stamina, and knowing how to drink a beer!
